As an AI evangelist, sometimes you have to hit the concepts, good and bad, head-on. This is one of those “ick” ones.

(Trigger warning, I am not fatphobic)

Remember that Simpsons episode where Homer gets to work from home because of a, uh, weight issue and starts to figure out ways to automate his job and job performance? Basically, he ends up with a “drinking bird” that just rocks back and forth and hits “Yes” to vent the gas at the power plant (haha). Inevitably, the bird fails when he’s out for an afternoon matinee, and chaos ensues.

This is tokenmaxxing today.

The actual definition is this: Somewhere along the way, parts of the industry decided that the best way to prove AI maturity was to count how many tokens employees burn through in a week. That is tokenmaxxing, and if you squint, it looks innovative right up until you remember that enterprises are supposed to optimize for outcomes, not meter spin.

The appeal is obvious. Token usage is clean, numeric, and dashboard-friendly. Executives love a graph. Managers love a leaderboard. Employees, especially in high-pressure engineering cultures, quickly understand the new social contract: if AI usage is visible and valued, low usage starts to look like low ambition.

This is how bad metrics sneak into good organizations. Not because anyone explicitly says, “Please waste money at scale.” Because usage is easy to count, and value is harder to prove. So the proxy takes over. Soon enough, people are running agents around the clock, stacking copilots on top of copilots, and quietly hoping nobody asks the rude question: did any of this produce better work? (spoiler: no)

No, Seriously, Are We More Productive or Is It Just “Very Expensive Enthusiasm”?

That question matters because enterprise AI is not a demo booth. It is infrastructure, governance, workflow design, human review, cost discipline, and measurable business effect. If your program cannot connect AI usage to faster approvals, fewer revision cycles, better first-pass quality, lower support burden, or safer automation, then what you have is not transformation. It is very expensive enthusiasm (crying laughing emoji face).

There is also a deeper issue here that enterprise leaders should not ignore. Tokenmaxxing changes employee behavior because it turns AI use into a status signal. When workers believe they are being judged on visible AI activity, they will produce visible AI activity. That does not mean they are producing better architecture, better code, better research, or better decisions. It means they learned the game.

And enterprise teams know what happens when people learn the game. You get optimization against the metric instead of alignment to the mission. We have seen this movie before with lines of code, ticket velocity, and pull request counts. Now the same bad habit has a new wrapper and a much larger invoice, making it super difficult to predict.

Worse, the human cost is starting to show. Reporting on Harvard Business Review research describes a pattern of cognitive fatigue tied to excessive AI oversight, with workers reporting decision fatigue and higher error rates when they are constantly bouncing between tools and monitoring outputs. That should alarm every enterprise leader trying to scale AI into production. A burnt-out reviewer supervising ten autonomous systems is not an efficiency model. So, How Do We measure Outcomes from AI?

So what should replace tokenmaxxing? Better measurement. Mature enterprise programs should track where AI changed the workflow, which tasks improved, how the output quality was validated, and whether the business case actually moved. Usage data still matters, but it belongs in the telemetry layer, not on the ‘throne’.

This is where a real enterprise AI platform conversation starts. The serious question is not “How many tokens did your team consume?” The serious question is “What work became faster, safer, cheaper, or more scalable because your platform, controls, models, and runtime made production AI usable across the organization?” That is the difference between AI as a line item and an AI operating model.

For enterprise platform teams, this should sound familiar. You do not judge a Kubernetes program by how many YAML files people wrote. You judge it by whether applications ship reliably, securely, and at scale. AI should be no different. Consumption is not capability. Burn is not business value.

Tokenmaxxing will probably stick around for a while because it flatters both sellers and insecure buyers. But the enterprises that win will be the ones that outgrow it first, because:

• They will treat tokens as cost and activity signals, not proof of impact.

• They will demand workflow-level evidence.

• They will insist on governance and human accountability.

• And they will stop mistaking motion for progress.

That is the part worth saying out loud: An enterprise does not need more tokenmaxxing, it needs fewer vanity metrics and a much sharper definition of what productive AI actually is.
